Frequently asked questions about steel equivalences

What is the European equivalent of SAE 4340 steel?
SAE 4340 (AISI 4340) is a Ni-Cr-Mo alloy steel for quenching and tempering. Its most cited correspondences are EN 40NiCrMo7, DIN 40NiCrMo8-4, W.Nr. 1.6562 and JIS SNCM439. There is a documented discrepancy between sources over the exact Werkstoffnummer: some references point to 34CrNiMo6 (1.6582), whose Ni and C content differs slightly from 4340. Always verify against EN 10083-3 before substituting the material.
Are steel equivalences exact and interchangeable?
Not necessarily. Two steels considered equivalent have similar composition and mechanical properties, but rarely identical ones. Composition ranges, heat treatments and tolerances vary between national standards. The correspondences in this tool are for reference only and must be validated against the applicable specification (EN, DIN, ASTM, JIS) and with an engineer before substituting a material in a critical part.
What is a steel Werkstoffnummer (W.Nr.)?
The Werkstoffnummer, or W.Nr. material number, is the German/European numeric material identification system (for example 1.6582). The first digit indicates the material group (1 = steel), and the following digits encode the family and a sequence. It is used alongside the EN designation and is defined in EN 10027-2. It is one of the most precise ways to identify a steel grade unambiguously across countries.
How do I convert an AISI/SAE designation to DIN or EN?
Enter the AISI/SAE code (for example 4340, 1045 or 4140) into the search box and you'll get its equivalent designations in DIN, EN, W.Nr., UNE, JIS and other systems, along with the steel family and the validation status of each correspondence. You can also search by the W.Nr. number (1.XXXX), by the EN/DIN name, or filter by standardization system.
Why do some sources disagree on a steel's equivalence?
Equivalences between standards are not always one-to-one: different commercial catalogs and standards may assign slightly different correspondences depending on the criterion (chemical composition, mechanical properties or application). When we detect that sources disagree, we flag the grade as a source discrepancy and show the comparison of each reference so you can make an informed decision.
