Machining Under IATF 16949 Is Not Holding the Certificate: How to Validate Your Supplier

Holding an IATF 16949 certificate and manufacturing under that system are two different things, and confusing them disqualifies good suppliers or approves ones that should not have passed. This guide separates the four actors in the chain and explains what evidence to ask each one for.

Purchasing asks a supplier for "the IATF" and receives a PDF that was not what was needed, or a "we don't have it" that disqualifies a shop that could in fact produce the part. Both outcomes are the same kind of error: treating certification as a checkbox instead of understanding who can hold it and what replaces it when it is absent.

The distinction is concrete. IATF 16949 is certified at sites that manufacture automotive parts. Manufacturing under that system, by contrast, is what a supplier does when it produces inside the quality system of a certified customer. 5. How to validate a supplier without the certificate

If the supplier does not hold the certificate, this is the evidence that replaces it. It is not a goodwill list: it is what a second-party auditor will ask for.

  1. An ISO 9001 certificate verified in a register, with a scope that mentions machining and the address of the site that will produce.
  2. A control plan specific to your part, not a generic template with the name changed.
  3. Capability studies on the characteristics that matter, with data rather than a statement.
  4. Current calibration certificates for the instruments that will measure your critical callouts.
  5. Demonstrated traceability: that they can take a finished part and get back to the material and the run.
  6. A second-party audit. You or your customer perform it, on site, against the real process and not against a binder.
  7. A written nonconformance policy: containment, root cause analysis, and what happens to out-of-spec parts.
